Registration for Da Voar Redd Up 2024 is now open

Published: 13 March 2024

Back for its 37th year, Da Voar Redd Up is Shetland’s most successful annual community beach and roadside spring clean-up.

Da Voar Redd Up (DVRU) which is managed by Shetland Amenity Trust will take place next month from Saturday 20 – Friday 26 April 2024, and you can sign up now.

The event is a regular feature in the Shetland calendar and makes a huge contribution to the protection of Shetland’s natural environment and wildlife, clearing Shetland’s beaches, coastlines and roadsides of litter and the debris washed up by the winter storms.

Rory Tallack, one of the organisers behind the DVRU campaign, said: “DVRU is a fantastic volunteer-led community event where people can get together with others in the fresh air and make a meaningful difference to Shetland’s natural environment.

“Last year over 200 groups took part - from toddler groups to knitting groups. There was a great mix of folk - we also had lots of families, churches, neighbours, schools and sports clubs coming together in this fantastic beach and roadside clean up.”

DVRU is open to everyone in the community. Redd Ups are usually undertaken by groups, such as families, schools and community groups. Anyone keen to join in but isn’t sure how is encouraged to get in touch with SAT organisers who will help put them in touch with a group.

To sign up simply register online via the SAT website and choose a Redd Up location, which also means that the organisers can ensure that different groups are not cleaning the same places. Bags will be provided and during registration there is the option to specify a roadside collection of bags after the Redd Up.

As always, folk are encouraged to look out for any unusual finds during their clean ups. Mermaid’s Purses should be logged with the Shark Trust, as the information gathered will help inform important research.
