Fair Isle Friday Fun

Published: 08 October 2019

Last Friday, 4th October 2019, saw the launch of ‘Fair Isle Friday’ as part of the Shetland Wool Week 10th year celebrations.  People across the world wore their Fair Isle to mark the event and shared the pictures on Social Media.  Lots of local organisations and businesses got involved posting pictures online using #SWWFairIsleFriday.

Shetland Amenity Trust, organisers of Shetland Wool Week, launched ‘Fair Isle Friday’ to celebrate and raise the profile of Fair Isle design and Shetland’s textile heritage.  It is hoped that it will become an annual event as part of Shetland Wool Week.

Sandy Middleton, Head of Engagement at the Shetland Amenity Trust said, “It has been great to see the whole of Shetland really get into the spirit of the event with lots of schools, businesses and organisations getting involved.  The Fair Isle Primary School sent us some fantastic photos of them all wearing their Fair Isle and the team at the Shetland library really went to town wearing their Fair Isle and decorating the library in the distinctive design.”

Shetland Ponies ‘Fivla’ and ‘Vitamin’ from Thordale farm visited Hay’s Dock on Friday wearing their Fair Isle cardigans and were treated like celebrities by both Wool Week visitors and residents alike.    At Sumburgh Head the team gave the café a woolly makeover and donned their Fair Isle jumpers and hats in celebration.  Various teams at the Shetland Islands Council also got involved wearing and sharing their Fair Isle on Twitter.  See our gallery below and here.
