2017 Shetland Nature Festival Programme Announced

Published: 01 June 2017

ZoomThe programme of events for the 2017 Shetland Nature Festival has been published online today, with tickets available from Monday 5th June.

This is the tenth year of the Festival, which is organised by Geopark Shetland, and managed by Shetland Amenity Trust, in partnership with RSPB Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage.  The festival is now a firm fixture in Shetland’s summer calendar and attracts locals and visitors alike.

As usual, the festival will open on Saturday with Noss Open Day. While the schedule includes festival favourites, such as guided walks on Shetland’s nature reserves, a number of new events have also been added this year.

Scottish singer/songwriter, Jenny Sturgeon, will be delivering two songwriting workshops, exploring new approaches and ideas inspired by the natural world, while a Coastal Cooking event will give festival-goers the chance to learn how to forage for their dinner on a Shetland shore.

Geology Project Officer Rory Tallack said: “As always, the schedule is designed to cater for everyone, from children and families to wildlife enthusiasts. Local artist Diane Garrick will be leading another botanical-drawing workshop in the picturesque Stevenson Centre at Sumburgh Head, while kids can be amazed by magical storytelling at Kergord!”

The festival is run in partnership with European Geoparks Week and includes a series of geology-themed walks and talks. Our Dynamic Earth will also be returning to the festival, with family-friendly workshops around Shetland throughout the week.

While many events are held on a drop-in basis, some do require booking. The programme is now available online at http://www.shetlandamenity.org/whats-on and bookings will be available from Monday 5th June, where applicable.  Tickets can be booked on line at www.thelittleboxoffice.com/sat or by calling along the Shetland Amenity Trust office in Garthspool during office hours.
