Sumburgh Head Café to re-open

Published: 17 September 2019

The popular café at Sumburgh Head is set to re-open this week.  The café suffered extensive water damage earlier in the season as water leaked in through the spectacular curved windows.  Repair works are now complete and Katja Stübiger of ‘Katja’s Cakes’ will be running a pop-up café for the remainder of the season.

The Shetland Amenity Trust run the visitor centre and café at Sumburgh Head.  When it became apparent that the café would not be ready in time for the summer season, they invited Katja to bring her ‘Unken Wagen’ to Sumburgh Head for the summer.  Selling coffee and speciality cakes from her adapted catering van, Katja has proved popular with visitors and locals alike.  Now that repairs are complete, the Shetland Amenity Trust have invited Katja to run the café for the remainder of the season.

Ruth Mackenzie, Chair of the Shetland Amenity Trust said, “Katja and her Unken Wagen have been a wonderful asset this season.  We have had fantastic feedback from customers and staff alike.  We are a VisitScotland 5 Star accredited visitor attraction and during our recent assessment they had nothing but praise for Katja’s wonderful coffee and cake and outstanding customer service.”

Katja has been running her business ‘Katja’s Cakes’ for a number of years and more recently operating from her ‘Unken Wagen’ catering van.  She said, “I have really enjoyed working at Sumburgh Head this season from my van.  They are a great team to work with and it is an incredible location – the visitors just love it.  I am really excited to be running a pop-up café for the remainder of the season.  The café space is just incredible, the view and the atmosphere is amazing, no matter the weather.”

The café will reopen on Friday 20th September until Sunday 6th October and will be open 5 days per week from Wednesday through to Sunday from 10am to 5pm.  The plan is to be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, however, it may open more often where time allows – keep an eye on social media and the Sumburgh Head website for updates at www.sumburghhead.com .
