The suns energy can be harnessed in two ways:
- To provide hot water for your home
- To produce electricity
Solar panels designed to convert the sun’s energy into electricity are known as photovoltaic systems. We’ve all seen these types of panel before in calculators and watches, and they can even generate electricity on cloudy days.
For solar panels to be effective you need to have a south-facing roof with around five metres square of unobstructed space. Obviously the space needs to be un-shadowed for the panels to work at maximum efficiency
Solar water heating
Solar water heating works alongside your existing hot water system. By providing almost all of your hot water in the summer and even some in the winter, solar water heating reduces your reliance on conventional boilers, saving you money and reducing your carbon footprint.
