Place Name Sources
Several books consider Shetland place namesZoomA number of printed works, original maps and documents and oral recordings are very useful for the study of place names.
Some of these are deposited in:
- Shetland Archives;
- Scottish Place-Name Survey;
- National Records of Scotland;
- Local museums and heritage centres;
- Private hands.
Useful printed works include Jakobsen and Stewart's place name books and booklets on the coastal names of Fair Isle and Papa Stour. Where possible the Shetland Place Names Project has obtained copies of relevant books, maps and documents.
