Nature Festival Launches with Photography Competition

Published: 02 July 2015

ZoomShetland Nature Festival begins a week of varied nature-themed events throughout the isles on Saturday. To celebrate the start of the festival, festival co-ordinators Shetland Amenity Trust are delighted to announce the launch of an online photo competition which has been generously sponsored by Serco Northlink Ferries.

During the week, the programme of events includes nature walks, drawing and painting classes, herbal remedy making, family fun days and for the more adventurous nature lover, rock climbing and coasteering. There are family fun days with the team from Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh, and a chance to see some of our smaller species with 'It's a Bugs Life' and 'Incredicle Insect' events.

In association with Northlink Ferries, Shetland Nature Festival are offering budding photographers the chance to share their Shetland Nature images to win a return trip for two people and a car between Lerwick and Aberdeen, with cabin accommodation.  To win this great prize, entrants should choose a photo they have taken between Saturday 4th and 11th July, protraying 'Shetland Nature', and upload it to Twitter, Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #ShetlandNatureFestival. Photos can be posted direct to the Shetland Nature Festival Facebook or Twitter Pages, or on the entrants own page (as long as privacy settings allow the image to be viewed) but must include the #ShetlandNatureFestival tag.

Entries must be submitted by midnight on Sunday 12th July and the winner will be announced after this date.  Full terms are conditions are available here.

There are still spaces available to book on events through the week, and many are also drop-in with no booking required.  See the full programme here.

A Shetland Amenity Trust spokesperson said "It's great to be kicking off another Shetland Nature Festival. The photo competition is a fantastic way to encourage folk to get out and about in our glorious landscape and get snapping away with the chance to win this amazing prize, for which we are very grateful to Northlink Ferries. We're thrilled to have the Our Dynamic Earth team back with us again and look forward to seeing lots of people over the next week at their events.  The open days are a really good way to take part in a variety of activities and are suitable for the whole family.  There's so much going on - we just want to encourage people to get outside and explore!"
