Any environmental project completed during 2014 is eligible and the Trust would encourage those who have undertaken these projects, or anyone who knows of a worthy project, to apply.

This is the 26th year of the awards, which aim to acknowledge projects that demonstrate sustainability, innovation and best practice in the conservation and enhancement of Shetland’s Environment.

Brian Gregson, chair of the Shetland Environment Group which judges the awards, said: “The Shetland Environmental Awards have celebrated an incredible range of projects undertaken by an array of organisations, including private business, community groups, schools, youth projects, individuals and larger organisations.”

Whilst there are no specific categories, nominations may come from projects associated with recycling & waste management, the built environment, habitat creation & land stewardship, prevention of litter & pollution, heritage & culture and environmental improvement & awareness.

Mr Gregson, added: “The group always looks forward to receiving the award applications as they give a real sense of the impressive range of environmental projects undertaken in the isles.

There may be established local projects, exciting community initiatives, innovative new ideas, individuals who have gone that extra mile or businesses striving to lower their environmental impact. We are always heartened to see so many different areas of our community willing to put time and effort into protecting and preserving our environment.

We would encourage everyone who has undertaken relevant projects to apply. Many of the projects entered are nominated by members of the public. If you know of a project which deserves the recognition of an Environmental Award please request an application pack and put them forward.”

The awards are again sponsored by the major players within the environment sector in Shetland, including Scottish Environment Protection Agency, Scottish Natural Heritage, Shetland Islands Council, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Shetland Civic Society, VisitShetland and, of course, Shetland Amenity Trust. The awards event is also sponsored, by the Total E&P UK and Dong Energy Laggan-Tormore Project. This successful partnership approach to the awards is a great way for all the organisations involved to come together to acknowledge the invaluable environmental projects undertaken every year in Shetland and to thank the people involved.

Applications can now be completed online through the Shetland Amenity Trust website: www.shetlandamenity.org/shetland-environmental-awards. Electronic application packs can also be requested through: info@shetlandamenity.org and paper copies from the Shetland Amenity Trust offices, Garthspool, Lerwick; call 01595 694688.

The application is very simple to complete and further supporting information and photographs are also welcome. The closing date for award applications is 12 noon, Friday 12th September with the awards presented at a ceremony in the Shetland Museum and Archives in November.
